Frank Gambale / Acoustic improvisation /1

Frank Gambale Natural High & selection

Frank Gambale is know for his sweep picking technique. Because of this a lot of people see him as 'just a shredder'. Frank however is a great musician. He's been playing with the great Chick Corea now for many years. His solos display a great knowledge of jazz-harmony and phrasing. He has released two wonderful acoustic Cd's called Natural High and the second one Natural Selection.
On these outstanding cd's he plays jazz in an acoustic setting. Frank on acoustic guitar, Otmar Ruiz on piano and Alain Caron on fretless bass. They play original tunes and a lot of standards. Frank has created his own melodies on the tunes. Have you met miss Jones is now called 'Have you met Tom Jones'. 'We'll remember December' was written over the changes of 'I'll remember April'.
Here you can find a great interview with Frank on a lot of aspects of his playing, gear and a lot more.

Gibson Larry Carlton Es 335

You gotta love a 335! The sound is great. A lot of jazz (-rock)guitarists prefer it over a Les Paul which can get quite heavy. If this 335 is too big for you you can try the ES336 or ES339.

Copied from

Since the late 1960s, Larry Carlton has appeared on thousands of recordings as a session player, in addition to his work as a solo recording artist which has earned him 18 Grammy nominations to go along with his three Grammy statues. Throughout it all, the main constant in Carlton’s wide-ranging career has been his beloved 1968 Gibson ES-335, which he still uses today.

From the time his parents put a six-string into his hands at the age of six to his first gig at a supper club in 1962 to his first recorded album in 1968, With A Little Help From My Friends, “Mr. ES-335” has wowed audiences and critics alike with his virtuosity, and his unique bluesy rhythmic melodies and ringing guitar tone. He immediately endeared himself to anyone who was lucky enough to hear his distinctive blend of American jazz, blue, rock and pop guitar, which he developed by studying the inspirational techniques of artists like Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel, B.B. King, along with legendary saxophonist John Coltrane and trumpeter Miles Davis.

Body and Neck

Gibson Custom decided to honor Carlton’s legacy in 2004 with the introduction of the Larry Carlton ES-335, which faithfully recreates his renowned six-string semi-hollowbody guitar, thus making it the perfect instrument for any musical setting. This legendary instrument features plain laminated maple top, back, and rims, with single-ply, crème-colored binding around the top and back. The finish has been dubbed the “Carlton Burst” for its resemblance to the faded burst finish on Carlton’s original guitar. The standard 24¾-inch scale neck features a slim-taper profile, topped with a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard, pearloid block inlays and single-ply binding along the fingerboard.

A pair of Gibson’s legendary ’57 Classic pickups deliver all the warm, full tone and balanced response expected from a Gibson humbucker. Other standard appointments include a Nashville Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, Schaller M6 tuners and chrome-finished hardware. The Larry Carlton ES-335 from Gibson Custom comes with the standard Gibson Custom case and certificate of authenticity.

Larry Carlton: Smiles to go Changes

Here are the changes from the song 'Smiles and smiles to go' by Larry Carlton. It is from the CD Alone/ But Never Alone MCA records. It features Larry on acoustic guitar and some keyboards also. Terry Trotter- keyboards, Abraham Laboriel- bass, Rick Marotta- drums and Michael Fisher-percussion.
At this moment you can't get the original Cd in the iTunes store but you can get the 'Greatest Hit re-recorded'. This grammy award winning Cd contains LC's greatest hits but he really did re-record them with his son, the fabulous bass-player Travis Carlton.

Adding color to dominant 7 chord part II

Using E melodic minor adds the #11. D -sharp in this case. You can play a melodic minor scale starting on the 5th off any V7 (dominant 7) chord to add color.

A7 is the 4th degree of the E melodic minor scale.
B7 is the 5th degree of the E melodic minor scale.
Combining these two arpeggios sounds just great and opens up a lot of possibilities.
In the last bar : 5 should be 6. (c#)

Adding color to dominant 7 chord

Within each chord there are several other 'hidden' chords. Remember that chords are thirds from a scale that are stacked, one on top of the other. Stack 1-3-5-7 and you have a chord. Starting again on that 3 note you get 3-5-7-9. Starting on the 5 you get 5-7-9-11 etc.

Peter Tiehuis Holland's no:1 session player

Peter Tiehuis is Holland's number one session player. As one of the guitarists of the Metropole Orchestra he has played with many great names in the business. You may have seen him next to Steve Vai, Pat Metheny or John Scofield. Not many guitarists can do this and win the respect of these outstanding collegues. He has played on countless cd, film scores and commercials. He still finds time to play with his own trio 3HANDSCLAPPING with bassplayer Theo de Jong and perscussion player Bart Fermie. Check out his website for some amazing audio files of his new impro-project with Arno van Nieuwenhuize on drums and Frans van der Hoeven on bass.

Peter plays his own customshop model by Dick Dijkman from Holland. An extremely versatile guitar.

Multiac Nylon Duet Ambiance

I'm a big fan of Godin Guitars. The multiac series are just great. The nylon and the steelstring versions have a wonderful feel. They always sound super. Sylvain Luc is of course their best ambassador. Leonardo Amuedo uses a Multiac Grand concert. Recently I saw a concert with Peter Tiehuis using a Grand concert also.

The Multiac Nylon Duet Ambiance features state of the art custom electronics by Fishman, that allows the player to select between 4 individual mic settings. Choose between these blendable sound imaging mics via the 4-way selector switch. Ideal guitar for players looking for a an incredible, amplified nylon string sound and feel in a live and loud band setting with virtually no feedback.

The Multiac Duet Ambiance nylon string, also features a 25 ½” scale and slimmer nut width than the classically inspired Grand Concert Duet Ambiance, making it easy for electric steel string players to transition to nylon strings. This model features a chambered mahogany body with a solid spruce top, as well as a dual source preamp with feedback control and under saddle transducer.
