Marc Guillermont: The French King of Fusion talks to Truth In Shredding

From NAMM 2013

I have been a big fan of Marc Guillermont's playing over the years having appeared on numerous jazz fusion albums and solo efforts... I just love his fluid legato playing, and that blend of inventiveness that separates the men from the boys. I'd not seen Marc play live except on YouTube videos. So you can imagine my pleasure whilst attending NAMM in California, bumping into Marc Guillermont on the Paul Lairat stand. I watched him play, grabbed a bag of video and solo camera shots. Like all players he's drawn to the very best talents and I catch him at the MI stand watch Scott Henderson play. Later in the year I caught up with Marc again at the Frankfurt Musikmesse. This time we said hello and I decided that I would at least get an interview together with this remarkably talented musician.

Check out John's website and buy that CD!!!

How it all began....
The "IN2 the Spirit" album project started out 'just for fun' one Christmas when I recorded an arrangement of Little Drummer Boy so I could teach it to my 7 year old son on drums and piano. After a few years, I had finished quite a few 'for fun' demos and friends & colleagues started requesting that I turn it into a "serious" Christmas album project....and....
now it has arrived! I've recorded with some of the world's finest talent including Bill Payne from Little Feat, Will Lee from the David Letterman Show and Keith Carlock drummer for Sting, James Taylor and Steely Dan.

Scofields Uberjamband in Amsterdam.

Here are some pics from the rehearsal of the Uberjamband. I had the privilege to be there. Earlier that week John and I had emailed about a possible interview and he suggested to hook up with Avi since we had done quite a long interview earlier this year. Besides, Avi had far more interesting 'tech-stuff'. Of course I wanted to interview Avi because he's one of the most interesting and innovative sound-scultors on guitar around.  I will post the interview later this week after some editing. Some great stuff there. Avi showed me all his gear and an in depth look on his use of Ableton live and MIDI-guitar software.

Uberjamband Deux rehearsal: John Scofield, Louis Cato, Andy Hess and Avi Bortnick.

Watching the rehearsal was quite interesting. Because of all the Tech stuff going on it was extremely important to have a great stage sound. If you have to play along to rhythm samples you want to be spot on. Louis Cato sang I don't need no doctor so they had to check that too. All of a sudden they played Hey Joe by Hendrix and Sco played a great wha-based rock solo.
After they had finished Sco started to play some jazz-lines and Louis immediately started to play with John. The played an amazing version of Four . It was just guitar and drums and they were swinging their ass off. Then Louis took the microphone and started singing the baseline while continuing to play the drums. Then John started playing the chords and started scatting! Man that was such a great experience! This was before the interview and the amazing performance of the Überjam Deux band at the BIM huis in Amsterdam.

10 questions with Frank Gambale

Frank Gambale may not be a household name in the traditional sense but for those of us that have been paying attention, you don't have to look very far to find Frank's name being thrown around within the world of Guitar, Jazz or Guitar Instruction. In fact, he's been an important "player" in the world of guitar dating back to the early 80's. Back in the 80's, Frank released several solo efforts as well as his first instructional video, Monster Licks and Speed Picking, to much critical praise. As a GIT graduate, Frank also spent some time teaching at his alma mater. Frank's instructional technique truly excited players in revolutionary ways. In the later part of the 80's, Frank joined forces with Steve Smith (of Journey fame) in Vital Informationand also worked with Mike Varney's label on a unique project featuring him, Brett Garsed and Shawn Lane.
Fg Promo 1 Jpg 13097Clearly, Frank has kept himself quite busy and now as we fast forward to 2011, we find Frank out on the road touring with Chick Corea's Return to Forever and doing what he does, so very well. Currently on tour, be sure to visit Franks' site for more information. So now, let us catch up with Frank - he's been busy we know but what's he been up to recently. Frank takes the time to answer our 10 Question segment... Frank, thanks for taking the time to chat with us. What is your daily practice routine?
Frank Gambale: When I was younger my routine was rigorous. I remember at least two times in my life when I was practicing 12 hours a day for years at a time. I was absorbing as much as I could. I was copying songs from records. I was into learning all the parts including the keyboard voicings, the horn parts, the vocal harmonies….as well as the guitar parts…I was really interested in how all the parts fit together. These days, with a lot less time to spare I find myself focusing on things that I need or music that I have to learn for a show….or writing my own new music. I think it’s important to think about what you want to achieve if you have an hour to practice. Take 10 minutes and think “what do I play on an E7#9 chord or I want to learn the chords and melody to Passages”. Then off you go, you have a mission and a timeline! I work well with deadlines. What is your process for writing tunes?
Gambale: It’s a labor of love. Sometimes…….

Looper's delight

Looping is hot. I use it when teaching or studying. Some people have turned it into an art form.
I've seen amazing performances where people layer complete arrangements live in font of an audience perfectly.

Jarle Bernhoft is an amazing artist using looper pedals to enhance his musicality.

For some it's frustrating not getting the timing perfect so the loop doesn't loop perfectly and the whole thing sounds wrong.

There are many loopers on the market nowadays and more and more appear every month.
There are a lot of different loopers out there. Very simple ones such as the Ditto looper by TC electronics or the complex ones like the Boss RC 300. The simple ones let you record and overdub and that's usually it. The more complex ones let you record sevaral loops which you can use independently. You can also add loops created on your computer or on the pedal itself and store them on your pedal.

Check out these site's to learn more about loopers.

Strymon BigSky - Reverb Effects Pedal

Strymon BigSky is the only effect used in the making of this video. Visit — Music by State Shirt [] and Pete Celi.

Plug into BigSky and instantly lift your sound into the stratosphere. The world below you fades into the distance, and you're elevated into a glow of lush, glorious, radiant reverbs. To create a reverb experience as natural, beautiful, and immersive as BigSky required tremendous feats of sound engineering and artistic imagination. Using the fundamentals of acoustical science as our beacon, we carefully studied and scientifically analyzed reverb technology from the past fifty years. We faithfully captured the essence of these classic sounds, and forged ahead to dream up our vision of reverbs from the future.

Feel the mechanical tension of the Spring reverbs. Hear the floating particles of the Cloud machine. Defy the laws of physics with the Nonlinear reverbs. Unleash the multi-head reverberations of the Magneto machine. BigSky gives you twelve studio-class reverb machines, each with simple yet powerful controls.

We knew we must take reverb to a whole new level. With careful attention to detail, innovative analog circuitry design, an insanely powerful SHARC processor, and the utilization of top-shelf components, we've developed a reverb pedal that fits on your pedal board yet has better audio quality than many rack reverb units. This fusion of science with art has just one goal. To provide you with the most musically inspirational reverb experiences possible.

Boomerang Phrase III Looper (new version for Sco)

$479.00 Boomerang Musical Products Boomerang Phrase III Looper
The Boomerang Musical Products Boomerang III Looper/Phrase Sampler is the ultimate in looping technology! Perfect for solo projects or ambient drones,t he Boomerang III looper allows you to overdub phrases in excellent quality. Inspire yourself with the Boomerang III Looper.

Serial Play Style - loops play one after the other like the Rang™ Plus
Serial Master Play Style - In addition to playing loops one after the other, there is a cool type of sync in the Serial Play Style where two loops can play simultaneously. If loop 3 is recorded first, it will become the master loop, otherwise it's just another loop and there is no master. If loop three is master, it can play along with the other loops. So at one time you can play loops 1 & 3, 2 & 3, 4 & 3, but not 1 & 2, etc. Loops 1, 2 and 4 will be created so they are a multiple of the length of the master. For example, if master loop three is 4 seconds long, the other loops will be 4, 8, 12, 16... seconds long.
- Here's the purpose. For serial style loopers it's nice to have a rhythmic background behind the melodic loops. Mute the strings and record a short "chika-chika" or beat on the sides of your acoustic axe. This rhythmic master loop can then play along with any other loop.
Sync Play Style - all loops can play simultaneously and are synced so they stay together
Free Play Style - all loops can play simultaneously and are NOT synced; this is great for creating ambient soundscapes

Boomerang Musical Products Boomerang Phrase III Looper
3 or 4 loops - your choice
Stacking - "stacking" is adding a part to a loop
Undo/Redo - the last part stacked can be muted, then played again or rerecorded
Erase - loops can be erased one at a time or all at once; one loop can be erased while another plays
Copy Loop - a loop can be copied whether it is playing or not
Copy Live - this enables "re-sampling" and is very powerful; the pedal's output is routed to a new loop
Octave - loop plays at half speed and an octave lower
Reverse - loop plays backwards
Once - loop plays one time through then stops or if already playing, it stops at its end
Fade - loop fades in or out with one button press; fade time can be 3 to 43 seconds
Reverse Solo - this is a built-in effect and enables you to create reverse leads live
Two Sample Rates - 48KHz or 24KHz, both use 20 bit samples; through signal is always 48KHz / 24 bits
Thru Mute Function - turns off through signal
Expression Pedal Volume Control - plug in an expression pedal for foot control of playback volume
Loop Playback Volume Knob - this is always available to set loop playback volume
Decay Rate Knob - sets the rate at which earlier parts fade when new ones are added; continuously variable from 0-100%
Stereo or Mono - recording and playback will be stereo or mono depending on which of the Smart Jacks you use
Smart Jacks - the Rang™ III senses which jacks are being used and provides different signal routing options
The Boomerang® III chassis is the same wedge shape as the original but smaller. It's footprint is 6" (front to back) by 9" (side to side) by 2" tall, and weighs less than 3 lb. The MSRP (full retail price) is $559, but your local dealer can do much better than that.

All that Jazz w/Mike Stern - Oct 13 - Chromatic Arpeggios and Soloing on...

The following content is related to the October 2013 issue of Guitar World. For the full range of interviews, features, tabs and more, pick up the new issue on newsstands now, or in our online store:

My last two columns have been dedicated to the track "Out of the Blue," an original composition from my latest release, All Over the Place. Last month I discussed a few ways to approach soloing over the tune, and I'd like to continue on that tack this month by detailing a specific soloing concept that I often like to employ, which is the use of arpeggios combined with chromaticism (using notes a half step, or one fret, apart).

Like a standard blues form, the "Out of the Blue" solo section is 12 bars long, starting with four bars on the "one" chord, G7, followed by two bars on the "four" chord, C7 and then two more bars back on the one, G7. The twist comes in the last four bars, in that, in bars 9--11, I establish an Ef7-F7 alternating-chord sequence, followed in bar 12 with a single bar of the flat-two, or flat-nine, chord, Af7.

Stuff - Live at Montreux '76 (1978)

Stuff Live at Montreux 1976 - Full Concert

Stuff was a New York-based jazz funk band active in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The members were Gordon Edwards (bass), Richard Tee (keyboards), Eric Gale (guitar), Cornell Dupree (guitar), Chris Parker (drums), and later Steve Gadd (drums).

Stuff was a group of session musicians with jazz chops who united under the less-is-more banner of the groove. The result was, in effect, one of the all-time great R&B cover acts through the 1970s. Stuff’s shifting personnel had solidified by the time it played the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1976. On the resulting live DVD and CD, guitarists Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale, keyboardist Richard Tee, bassist Gordon Edwards and drummer Steve Gadd won over a jazz audience by playing instrumental versions of hits by Stevie Wonder, Billy Preston and Earth, Wind & Fire.

Santana & McLaughlin - The Life Divine (Live at Montreux 2011)

One of the first lp's I bought from my own pocket money was Electric Guitarist by John McLaughlin. Jazz-rock has been a part of my life ever since.

"On 1st July 2011 Montreux hosted the reunion of two master guitarists Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin with their Invitation To Illumination concert. Both musicians have been regulars at Montreux across the years but this was the first time they headlined their own concert together. The show features most of the tracks from their classic 1973 album "Love Devotion Surrender" mixed in with a wealth of other material. The evening was a showcase of supreme musical virtuosity and spirituality and typified the approach of these two great artists. It is certainly a performance not to be missed."
